Apply the Chapter Concepts: Case in Point Isabella Sanchez
Isabella Sanchez, age four, is the only child of a single mother, Loretta. They share an apartment with another family that also recently emigrated from the Dominican Republic. Loretta is beginning a training program for data entry, which she hopes will lead to full-time employment. Neither Loretta nor Isabella speaks much English. Loretta has enrolled her daughter in a family child care home in her neighborhood.Isabella did not speak and she hid her face when her mother went to the home to make the initial arrangements.
1. Put yourself in the position of the child care provider. What are some of the issues to which you need to be sensitive in beginning relationships with Isabella and her mother?
2. What plans would you recommend to help Isabella adjust to your program?
3. How would you get the information about Isabella and her family situation that you would like to have as you begin work with her?
4. Imagine what some of Loretta’s concerns are as she begins to leave her daughter at the family child care home. How would you respond to these?
