Create a map showing Europe after World War II.
Assignment Prompt
In this assignment, you will conduct research, and then use what you learned to
create a map of Europe in 1945. This will help you to:
• Review the division of Europe between Western and Soviet areas of influence.
• Understand why this division led to conflict between the USSR and the United
States.
Assignment Instructions
Step 1: Gather materials and necessary information.
a) Ask your teacher whether you will be using presentation, drawing, or
artistic software to develop the map, or will be downloading, printing, and
then completing your map before scanning it into the computer.
b) Download and print out the blank map worksheet included in this
document. If you will be using drawing software, copy and save the blank
maps in the appropriate program.
c) Use the Internet (or find books from your library) to find maps of Europe
from 1945. You may wish to search for “Cold war map” or “Post world war
II map” in your search engine to help you locate appropriate academic
websites.
Step 2: Read and follow each set of instructions carefully.
a) Follow all instructions for labeling and coloring your map.
b) Use drawing software (if making an electronic version) or pens and
colored pencils (if you have downloaded and printed your map) to create
the map as instructed.

c) Labeling Instructions: Create a map of Europe in 1945
1. Label these countries: Albania, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia,
Denmark, East Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Finland, France, West
Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal,
Romania, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, Turkey, USSR, Hungary,
Yugoslavia.
2. Label these cities: Berlin, London, Moscow, Paris.
3. Label the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, the Baltic Sea, the
Black Sea, and the North Sea.
4. Color the Soviet Union and aligned countries (satellite states) red.
5. Color Great Britain, France, and US-aligned countries green.
6. Color neutral (non-aligned) countries yellow: Austria, Finland, Sweden,
Switzerland, Yugoslavia, Ireland.
7. Color bodies of water blue.
8. Create a key for your map.
9. Add a compass rose.
